URBANE TOUCH
For Nick Thompson and Andrew Bloom, discovering their flat was definitely not a case of love at first sight. Within months of meeting each other five years ago. the couple embarked on a search for a home to share. I lowevcr. the property they eventually bought created a distinctly unfavourable first impression. From the outside i: was nothing special so our expectations were not high. recalls Nick. But when we stepped through the door, we instantly recognised its potential.
The north London apartment had recently been upgraded with underfloor heating, but the couple felt that it was still too dark and the bathrooms were on the small side. However, it had a generous and secluded outdoor terrace, which is great for warm days. Nick explains. But what really won us over was the laundry room, which is complete luxury in a central London flat!
Having made the decision to buy the place, the couple eventually moved in and brought with them furniture from both their old homes. Unfortunately, it didnt mix well. Nick admits. "Everything looked odd in here.

It was at this point that the pair realised the work involved transforming their home was more than they had bargained for. So Nick and Andrew approached designers Fiona Smythe and Luc Vanderdonckt to give the flat a fresh new look. We had several constructive conversations and rhey came back with a lot or reallygood ideas, so we started from there,- says Nick.
Fiona and Luc began in the bathroom, then worked their way around the whole apartment. The master en suite was stripped ind a skylight was added. They also installed a water tank up on the roof, which enabled the couple to get the right water pressure loi iheii lain shower. Then all iluce walls were covered in Italian glass mosaic tiles.
Elsewhere, the open - plan livingarea was repainted and dressed in a selection of contemporary pieces, while the adjoining kitchen was kept sleek and simple. We felt it was the one room we didnt need to change too much. Nlick says. Wc simply added an overhead extractor to bring the look togethi Although Nick and Andrew s styie is similar both confess lhat they clash when it comes to colour. Im far bolder in my choices," says Nick, while Andrew could happily live in a world of white and creams. But with its combination of soft neutrals and vibrant tones, the couples revamped flat has proved the perfect compromise.
