STARTING OVER

When Anne Smedley was faced with downsizing, a new - build flint cottage provided the perfect solution.
You could be forgiven for thinking that Anne Smedleys quaint cottage has stood in its pretty Kent location for some 200 years In facr. the house was built just three years ago by her fonner husband, a property developer, who was keen to create a characterful new - build. Because of its charming facade.
no one believes this is new." says Anne. People assume the house has been here forever, but unlike cottages with low ceilings and small rooms, this one has been designed with modern - day living in mind. I have underfloor heating and an en suite, yet the exterior is distinctly traditional. Its the best of both worlds.
Anne, who moved to the cottage following her divorce, wasnt always so enamoured of the four - bedroom cottage. It took me a while to settle in. she recalls. I moved here from a much larger home, so the cosy feel took a bit of getting used to."

STARTING OVER

Luckily, because the property was brand - new. Anne could choose her decor from scratch. At first I thought it would be best to decorate using neutral colours, she explains, but that turned out to be totally wrong for the house. I remember looking at the sitting room and thinking it was really bland, so I added a shock of raspberry fabric with the curtains and cushions, which brought the room to life. This was a pattern Anne followed throughout the house. The kitchen was cream and lacked life until I put in the lemon - coloured blinds, and then it just went "zing", she smiles. However, it was the addition of a conservatory that cemented Annes fondness for her home. Having proudly project - managed its build, Anne admits that the conservatory was more than just a new space for her. This was actually my first step towards expressing myself differently. she says. For the first time in ages I realised I could do exactly what I wanted with the design. Knowing I didnt have to heed anyone elses opinion. I went for something fresh and new and radically different to the rest of the house. It was liberating and I think the modern look juxtaposes perfectly with the rest of the house. I got a buzz out of creating it."
The cottage has already played host to Annes 60th birthday celebrations, with more than 80 guests, as well as her daughters wedding reception. This home really symbolises a brand - new start for me. she explains. Im making my own memories here, which is what its all about. My grown - up children love visiting and although I may have had my reservations at first, now I couldntsee myself livinganywhereelse."
