CALM WATERS

Ann - Marie and Nigel Doyles restful apartment enjoys uninterrupted views across an idyllic stretch of the Thames. Having worked in the Venetian property market for more than 25 years, it is no surprise to learn that Ann - Marie Doyle lias a love of buildings located by the water. And although she may not be able to see the Rialto bridge from the apartment she shares with her husband Nigel in southwest London, the views up and down the Thames arc just as impressive. I spend a lot of my time in Italy, so I needed somewhere within easy access of the airport; explains Ann - Marie. The location here is ideal, being quiet yet still enjoying excellent transport links. As Im away a lot. it was also important that my home is easy to clean and maintain This place has just the right number of bedrooms for the family our daughters Gaby and Madeline are students, but often come back to stay —and the size and layout of the reception areas is perfect for entertaining. Plus, we have the marvellous, uninterrupted views of the river. The Victorian apartment was in excellent condition when Ann - Marie and Nigel made the flat theirs. Apart from two fireplaces that had been boarded up, the rest of the original features including cornices, ceiling roses and sash windows - were all intact. It offered a fi no canvas on which we could put our work. Ann - Marie enthuses.

Employing the expertise of local designer Sarah Finney. Ann - Marie gave the interior a modern makeover. The bathroom was divided in two. with one part becoming an en - suite shower room and the other a separate WC. The kitchen was also upgraded, with the ceiling being lowered in order to install recessed spotlights. At the same time, Sarah designed and fitted a new limestone mantelpiece for the fireplace in the dining hall and also removed the dated 1960s glass - panel led doors throughout the flat. " I n their place, we put in panelled versions extending to the full height of the rooms." says Ann - Marie. Theyre the sort of designs you would find in 18th - century European mansions. Like many period apartments, the Doyles home is built around a central stairwell, so the nearest room to the front door - the dining hall - seemed rather gloomy/ We installed a huge 6ft mirror on one wall to enhance the feeling of light Ann - Marie explains. As a result, what was once the weak spot of the apartment has been turned into my favourite space. The couple also created a more informal dining area in the bay window of the sitting room. Nigel and I love to sit here and gaze up and down the river. says Ann - Marie. There %s always something to watch rowing boats, canal boats and lots of passing canoes." With the pair having acquired their own mooring and a boat, its clear that riverside living suits the Doyles. Being here is special." says Ann - Marie. Its the perfect retreat.
