Fabric coaster with crochet edging
Measurements
12,5cm diameter, without crocheted edging
You will need
For each coaster
2 circles 100% linen fabric, each 12,5cm in diameter
1 circle of thin batting, 12,5cm in diameter
red spray paint
bird template on page 119
soft cardboard
craft knife
tracing paper
4 strands of red embroidery thread scraps of 100% cotton double - knitting yarn in white, blue and red embroidery needle tapestry needle 3,5mm crochet hook dressmakers pins
To make
1 Trace the bird motif on page 119 onto soft cardboard. Cut out the stencil using the craft knife. Position the stencil in the centre of a linen circle. Spray the paint over the stencil then lift off the stencil carefully. Leave to dry.
2 Using the embroidery thread, embroider the birds eye with a French knot, as well as other detail such as the tail, if desired.
3 Place the two linen circles together with wrong sides facing and the batting between them.
4 Sew blanket stitch in white yarn through all three layers of fabric around the edge of your coaster, working the stitches 0,5cm apart.
Scalloped edging
Using a 3,5mm crochet hook, join the yarn into any blanket st - sp. Work 1 dc into same sp as join, miss 1 blanket st - sp, work 7 tr into next blanket st - sp, miss 1 blanket st - sp, si st into next sp , rep from to until the scalloped edging goes all around the coaster, si st into 1st dc.
C/off and darn in all loose yarn ends.
Picot edging
Using a 3,5mm crochet hook, join yarn into any blanket st - sp, work 1 dc into same sp as join, work 4 ch, si st into 3rd ch from hook, miss 1 blanket st - sp, si st into next blanket st - sp , rep from to until the picot edging goes all around the coaster, si st into 1 st dc. C/off and darn in all loose yarn ends.
