HAPPY TOGETHER

>alison and mark diamond s first marital home combines their love for both classic and modern design
During the early days of their courtship, Alison and Mark Diamond would spend the weekends at Mark s rented flat in Edinburgh. But as the love affair blossomed, followed by the decision to get married, the couple opted to buy a place of their own in the city. At the time, I was still Hving in Aberdeenshire. Little did Alison realise that the same flat would become the couple s future home.

DECISIVE MOVE Not one to let an opportunity slip through his grasp. Mark put in an immediate offer. But buying the top - floor apartment in a Georgian townhouse required a leap of faith, as the flat was near derelict.4 It lacked central heating or a decent citchen and bathroom, while the electrics and plumbing were archaic, Alison explains. As the repairs progressed, the pair began sourcing fixtures and fittings to dress their new home. While Mark has a passion for antiques and traditional interiors, Alison is an admirer of modern design, favouring a minimal look. She also has a love of monochrome decor. As a result, the kitchen and bathroom are the areas that most reflect her influence. Mark is very clear - sighted, while I cant always anticipate how things will actually turn out, Alison admits, but I was adamant about this scheme. referring to the black - and - white bathroom. Likewise, the kitchen combines white - painted units with black worktops and accessories.

HAPPY TOGETHER

A BOLDERAPPROACH Tve always plumped for white walls with no pattern. Alison continues, but Mark wanted to be more daring/ The result is the dramatic wallpapers in the sitting room and master bedroom. Once wed started down this route, I really warmed to it. Alison confesses. I wouldnt have even contemplated this style before. Marks preferences are also apparent in the guest suite, where his Empire - style antiques make a glittering display. In the master bedroom, the couple opted for modern interpretations of these classic designs. We thought this flat, with its fine period details, offered a perfect backdrop for such elegant pieces, says Alison.

HOME AT LAST

After little more than three months work, the flat was ready to move into. We married soon after, so you could say our new home sealed the deal, says Alison. For the Diamonds, it certainly paid to take that leap of faith.
